Hopefully nothing else is going to die on me this week, but yesterday my bicycle suffered a fatal injury. I knew the frame was cracked in one place, and was about to take it to A&E (bike shop) but it beat me to it.
See : here for the gory pictures
When I did take it to the bike shop this morning, I discovered it had another crack in the seat stem... so in total - 3 defects on one frame. Nice.

Frame
Just going to replace the frame and keep your gears, wheels, tyres and other bits? Or whole new bike?
Hopefully...
The frame should be covered under warranty, but it depends on whether the manufactuer does the same frame any longer, and if not, what happens (presumably they'll offer me something of a similar type?)
It would be great if they gave me a new bike - as my back wheel is probably in need of being re-spoked... but it seems unlikely.
Mr Goodwin are you the next of kin?
Now about the bike, I'm afraid it's not good news.
Please sit down. Cup of tea?
It was very old wasn't it? Yes, sometimes these things happen for the best. I can tell it had been poorly for quite some time, he was literally held together by mud and rust.
Well I'm sorry to say that your 'Bikey' has now passed away. I know that must be a shock for you. Here have a tissue.
I don't think it suffered at all. It was a very quick end, one moment happily zooming along some road somewhere, then gone to the roads in the sky. A happier place.
Yes, we did everything we could think of to bring 'Bikey' back, but sadly it just wasn't meant to be. Like I said sometimes these things are for the best. Maybe it had just had too much mud. Or maybe we'll never know why 'Bikey' died, but I'm sure it's for the best.
Would you like to view 'Bikey' before we take him to the mortuary, err... sorry scrapheap?
typical!
It's typical of you to make fun of my loss! Bikey and I spent many happy hours together - mostly commuting, but we did sometimes stray a bit further from home (Hereford, Stratford, Kidderminster etc).
I've been plodding to work lately on my mountain bike, which needs a bit of loving care !! (It is 6 and needs some minor surgery)
Annoyingly I've still not heard from the bike shop - clearly they've either been lazy, or are racking up a nasty bill for me.

Bikey
I'd assumed the frame would be lifetime guaranteed? If it was, wouldn't that mean a replacement should be on its way?
But I'm not bothered. I have a new toy today, satnav for my car. If only I could change it's whingey voice....
hah! Get with it...
We've had a SatNav for _ages_ - I'm surprised it's taken you so long to get one.
Interestingly, there's a business in our work building that sells such things 2nd hand. If you'd told me I could have probably got one quite cheap.
any developments on your bike?
hi, I was doing a google search and came across your blog. I have a ridgeback super nova and have had it in and out of the bike shop over the last month because the gears were slipping. And I've suddenly realised its because the frame is snapped! Did your bike shop say it was covered under the warranty or not? My bike is about 2 or 3 years old.
ah hah...
Yes, they said it would be - but it's now been with them over two weeks. I'm yet to find out who will be paying the cost of e.g. moving the brakes/gears/pedals etc over to the "new frame" and what happens if they can't provide a similar replacement frame.
Interesting to hear someone else has problems with theirs, perhaps there is a design flaw with them? (Or we're both too fat or something?!)
I finally got my bike back a
I finally got my bike back a couple of weeks ago. They didn't charge me for moving the stuff over but gave the frame from a velocity (which they said was the same frame with different logos) any way I was just glad to get the bike back on the road. They said this was the 2nd bike they'd had in recently because of this. Did you have to pay anything for yours?
yes - I've had to pay
Apparently Ridgeback/Madison offered the bike shop £78, or a new frame. The bike shop took the new frame (which I suspect is the same as yours - they said it has carbon forks), as they didn't think £78 was a good deal.
However, the bike shop then told me that they wouldn't put my old parts on the new frame as it would result in an unsafe bike; and the cost of new parts + moving them over will be around £250. So, I'm not happy, but I have no real choice.
I believe I'm having :
* New Drive chain (chain, cogs etc)
* New rear wheel
* New headset
* New crankshaft
*sigh*
I had hoped that Ridgeback/Madison would have offered 2-300 to replace the frame - if they had, I would have spent the money to repair my mountain bike, and to buy a cheapish (disposable?) bike from Halfords. This clearly didn't happen.
Keeping up...
>>"We've had a SatNav for _ages_ - I'm surprised it's taken you so long to get one"
Well, I didn't realise I was trying to keep up with the Jones' sorry, Goodwins!
You can only regain my respect if you can get me a little cable for it - so it (which unlike lots of things in my flat I haven't yet named) can connect to Snowy the MacBook.
Your neighbours aren't selling the slightly scratched from fragments of glass, suspiciously new looking, recently unlocked, no questions asked (probably nicked from a street not too far away) brand of Satnavs now are they?! I always think your part of the West Midlands is slightly dodgy. Telford (the overspill of Birmingham) has a better class of drunk/drug addicts/unemployed/pikey lay abouts....
hah!
My part isn't dodgy - that's Redditch and Aston :-)
